Do all nurses address patients as "Honey, Sweetie & Sugar Pie"?
Recently my mother had open-heart surgery, in ICU afterwards this very young silly R. N. walked through the door saying, "How are you feeling Sweetie?" "Are you ok honey?". (this nurse was probably 25 years tops and most likely has never had a loved one in ICU in her entire life) I looked at her and said very calmly, " This patient has a name, her name is Mrs. Riley and if you forget her name it is Ma'am. She is not a child she is elderly. Well she quickly left the room. I didn't mean to upset her but, do they not teach anything about respect in Nursing Schools?. Does she not realize that quicker than what she thinks that she will be laying there in that patient bed? This isn't the first time that I have heard this from Nurses and I do know that not all nurses do this and you never ever hear a doctor refer to a patient as Honey or Sweetie. I could have understood this if the patient was a child but, when someone is say 40-60 years older than you? I was brought up to respect the elderly and to have respect when addressing or talking to them. Am I being too sensitive? I mean she really reminded me of Flo in the Sitcom "Alice" Could I get your opinion? Thanks in advance.
