Tropical fishtank?

i have had an empty fishtank in my room which i used for tropical fish now however i wish to use it for coldwater fish. is there anything i need to worry about for example, i wont need the heater will i. can i use the same type of filtering system? can i keep the ornaments from before in there or does it all need removing and scrubbing? any advice would be great thanks
